Different Types Of PPC Marketing
If you didn’t know already, PPC stands for Pay Per Click. What this means is that each time a user clicks on an ad, the advertiser is charged for it.
Whilst this is almost completely true, some channels charge slightly differently. Some PPC channels charge each time someone sees an ad, which is known as cost per impression or CPM.
It’s much more accurate to refer to PPC as paid ads or ads that are paid for. As opposed to traffic from non-paid traffic sources like Google Organic.
When it comes to PPC marketing, there are 3 main types that you have to choose from :
- Search Ads
This type of ad is shown on search engines like Google and Bing. When users are searching using search terms that are related to your business, you can choose to display text ads to send users to your website.
For ecommerce companies, it’s also possible to show shopping ads based on what users are searching for. These are ads which represent a product on a retailers website :
- Social Ads
These types of ads are shown to users when they are using social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. Unlike when using search ads, users aren’t actively searching for a product or service, so a different strategy needs to be used compared to search ads. And unlike search ads, you are commonly charged based on the cost per 1000 impressions (CPM).
- Display Ads
This type of ad is more commonly associated with banner advertising. Advertisers can choose to display their ads as an image or video, which users can then click on to go through to the advertisers website. One of the most popular channels for display ads is through the Google Display Network. According to Google, this channel can potentially reach over 90% of the entire internet. This is obviously a huge opportunity for advertisers.
All of the PPC channels mentioned above come one final opportunity. That is something called Retargeting.
Retargeting (also known as Remarketing) is a way of showing ads to users which have been onto a website, but haven’t yet crossed the line and become a customer.
These highly targeted ads allow advertisers to have another go at trying to bring users back to their website and turning them into a buyer. Most PPC channels can work for a business, but each of them will usually require their own strategy in order for them to provide the best return on investment possible.
Where businesses fall short when using different PPC channels, is that they try to replicate what’s working on one channel and copy it on another.
On Display Channels and Social Media Channels, it’s unlikely that a company would see great results by immediately sending a cold audience straight to a page to buy something.
Alternatively when using Search Ads, if a business was sending their traffic to a blog post related to the product that they were trying to sell, it would be unlikely that they would see as good results than if they were sending traffic directly to their category or product pages.
